The current trend in suburban Western Australia is to create homes that isolate the occupants whilst replicating modernist forms. These simple, linear shapes can be traced back to the masters such as Corbusier and his Villa Savoy. Hex House intends to use the rectilinear form of Villa Savoy as a basis for changing the current trend. The hexagon will be juxtaposed against the linear shape that we currently find ourselves trending towards. The hexagon represents communication, balance and union something that is lacking is contemporary suburbia. The shape is also a complete inversion of a gable which will allow people to relate to the form whilst being taken by its innovative use in residential architecture.
Australian’s more so than many other’s have an affinity with the outdoors. We enjoy the land, the water and the sky and our lives are enriched by the moments offered by the convergence of these elements. In keeping with Corbusier’s fifth point, Hex house reclaims the land taken by the building footprint and places it in the sky creating a new moment between land and sky that would have been lost with a traditional roof structure. The house opens onto these new spaces (both visually and physically) providing increased outdoor and private space for the occupants that is becoming ever rarer in Australia’s suburban landscape. The house intends to capture glimpses of the three elements of land, water and sky from every liveable space.
Not only do Australian’s appreciate the elements, we understand and respect them. Hex House uses this understanding of the elements to heat spaces in winter and cool them in summer. The roof garden provides a pivotal outdoor space for the occupants whilst significantly reducing the heat loading on the building and provides shade to the large glazed doors that sit underneath.
